I GET KNOCKED DOWN...BUT I GET UP AGAIN

Hi People.....realities are back again. Actually last time I deleted the contents of my blog because of so many disturbing and tasteless mails that I started to receive every minute. But things have changed now....while people were asking me to drop my blog there are many who have come forward and expressed the solicitation with me. The want the truth to be out so here it goes...to all those ready to bust the Great lakes myth. This time around it will be one on one. Once again I bid you…Don’t commit the mistake in haste of doing an MBA. Think rationally and then choose as to why you really want to do an MBA.

Don’t let it become the usual transition of GradàMBA or GradàWork ex 2-4 yrsà MBA. Think before you act. Do you really want to fall into same puddle?

Here are some realities about many people’s aspiration:

GREAT LAKES CHENNAI

1. GREAT LAKES IS NOT OFFERING AN AICTE APPROVED COURSE.

To all those merry people out there who cry out hoarse singing the praises of Great Lakes…here is one poser. Great Lakes does not give you an AICTE approved PG. That means that if you want to further studies in India your MBA will not be recognized. As per the Great lakes Website itself…

21. What about recognition to the program?

AICTE approval process for this programme is in progress. Academically Great Lakes has a strategic alliance with Stuart School of Business, Illinois Institute of Technology. The alliance ensures certification by both Great Lakes and IIT. Stuart is accredited in the US by ATGSB.

http://glakes.org/faq.htm (information available on Great Lakes Website)

I ask. It’s the fourth year in running of the college and still they could not get an AICTE approval. If some people who are there in the MBA arena for some years will remember what happened to the likes of ICFAI, AMITY and Rai Universities. There was a legal battle between the colleges and the AICTE and ultimately PGDM courses from these Universities were scrapped and the futures of students enrolled in turmoil.

Also in my last blog there was a lady who commented that her friend was working in Google and was denied a Visa to US as an MBA since his degree was not AICTE approved. The guy did his MBA from Great Lakes.

All those people who are denying these truths…I bid them to come forward and deny this.

2. GREAT LAKES HAS A VERY POOR B-SCHOOL RANKING.

Now I really laugh at people who deny this fact. It is an open truth that Great Lakes has a pathetic B-school ranking. It is really very heartening that people go on to defend there own college by denying the simple facts. NIRMA, IMI, SIIB, SIMSR, DoMS,GIM etc…rank better than the Great lakes. Don’t blame me please. Follow the simple truth. Here is the link if you do not believe me.

http://www.rankings.pagalguy.com/national.html

In many cases Great Lakes does not even figure in B-School surveys. Please deny this fact if anyone can.

3. DON’T GO ON FIGURES…THE PLACEMENTS AIN’T SO GREAT

I stated it earlier and I am saying it again that please put a thought before you go to the placements reports.

Placements figures given by the Great lakes a cumulative picture of International + Domestic Salaries. We all know that Foreign placements are always high on salaries (they are paid in dollars). Even if the foreign placements are not that good in terms of relative placements and profile offered, they still play a large role in hiking up the average salary component. Great lakes never gives a demarcated Domestic average salary or an International average salary. They just give the figure called “Average Salary” which is very dubious and misleading. And yes....did I tell you that International placements are very very few in number. Not more than 5 or 6 of the whole batch.

Hello my dear Great Lakes fans….please deny this fact also if you wish.

Also here is an inside news…people with IT tags on their sleeves..psst…listen..run if you can or else likes of HCL and Infosys BPO will take you away if you sit at the placement week.

Also the international profiles offered are pukable. Once Infosys BPO offered a profile for Server Management in Mauritius. ..Now that an onsite opportunity… is it not?

I guess people with good CAT and GMAT scores deserve much more than these kinds of profile. Run while you still can.

4. GREAT LAKES DOES NOT HAS ITS OWN CAMPUS.

When I posted this last time people went on a rampage. I just ask why? Is it not the truth? Great lakes does not has its campus or an hostel. They have small pithy classes in a shared accommodation. Forget the pristine and plush campuses for an MBA. Its shared acco and rented classes. When the issue was raised the Great Lakes authorities said that the campus will come up for batch of 2008. Now they have updated the FAQ section of their website and have postponed the date by one more year.

Refer Great lakes website:”

29. When will you shift to the new campus?

The ground work for the new campus has already begun. It is likely to be ready by March/April ’09
(Last year the website said as March/April ’08)

Don’t be crestfallen if I say that Symbiosis (which houses 5 colleges in one building) has a better campus. Its true. Ask the overzealous seniors.

  1. GREAT LAKES HAVE ONLY 6-7 PEOPLE AS PERMANENT FACULTY.

Great Lakes has a very small no. of permanent faculty. Rest all the teachers a visiting faculty.

Please refer

I will say no more.

  1. Hi...I had applied to Great Lakes but did not get through in the first list...

I knew some of the facts mentioned in your blog....but thought that the scholl is 'really' improving...all because the profile of the students (with higher CAT and GMAT) scores joining the institute! But as you have said....4 years is a little longer to get AICTE approval...

BUT I just went through ISB's website which has this FAQ:
"1) Does AICTE/UGC recognise the ISB’s Post Graduation Programme in Management?

The ISB neither offers a diploma nor a degree. It is a certificate programme for students with experience. Therefore, we have not sought recognition for our Post Graduate Programme in Management from either the AICTE or the UGC.
    "

So, why so much time to sought the approval??!!

Also, the placement analysis is worrisome. Hope someone comes up with a little explanation for this...!!

  2. Dude,

    Awesome work..

    Some replies...

    1. When did Great Lakes claim its AICTE approved. ISB is there for 8 yrs without AICTE approval--reason one yr courses are not approved by AICTE till date. The day that will happen Great Lakes will get approval.

    2. VISA - I am a Great Lakes Alumni and have been to UK twice within 7 months of passing out from Great Lakes. Got VISA in 1 - Read Correctly ONE flat day. Ask people in Cognizant, IBM, Infosys, TCS...VISA...grow up dude...

    3. International Placements and salaries...I refute the fact that they calculate average including international salaries. If you have any proofs bring it on. And how come they have international placements when they cant get VISA.

    4. I took loan from State Bank of India - They dont recognize most colleges which arent AICTE approved...still gave loan..

    5. Building - Isnt it known to all candidates that we dont have a awesome campus..and for all those who want that, i am sure wudnt even fill the forms.

    6. Faculty - The fact that you are giving link of great lakes website to prove that they have 6-7 faculties (permanent) makes it clear that they arent lying...And visiting faculties...dont they teach...what difference does it make whether its visiting or permanent. Dude when you can vouch for offshoring doing work for billions from India when client and your small percentage is cordinating from US/UK why cant you connect to the quality faculty and learn when they return after taking courses. I know profs who are in touch with previous batches students helping them build their entreprenaurial ventures..

Still every college has cons and so does Great Lakes but by writing all bad things on blogs if you are trying to influence minds of educated and intelligent people...i doubt you will be able to that.

I am sure all those who fill forms or plan to do mba's do their own research and then only take a decision - not based on an individual who is not ready to reveal his identity.

Any ways; good job and the things you have mentioned here will defintely help Great Lakes learn and improve and grow..if it wants to grow ...:)

  3. A reply to Great Laker..
Thanks for the comments man. Thanks for spending some time on the blog.Just some points that i want to raise.
    1. It is childish to compare ISB with Great lakes. ISB has world ranking of 20 (according to the latest Financial times of USA) whereas Great lakes has an Indian ranking of 37.
2.Regarding Visa, the incident was posted by a fellow blogger in my earlier blog in wordpress. However the Visa in question was a US visa
3.It is a well known fact that Institutes make this avg salary gig to attract prospective students. Why does not Great lakes come out with separate Avg. International salary and Avg. Domestic salary figures separately?
4.It was never a question of bank loan here. Indian bank has an MoU with Great Lakes.
5.Forget abt awesome campus, Glakes doesn't even have a decent campus. Accept the truth.
6.Again permanent faculty is an issue. You compared Glakes with ISB. well here is the list of faculty of ISB...just take a look.
    http://www.isb.edu/Faculty/FacultyDir.aspx?ddlfacultystatus=Resident%20Faculty

I can give you more lists if you want..

  4. well said..

    Dude..

    1. As far as rankings are concerned even one college in Delhi/Mumbai/Pune etc..is ranked in top 5 ..lets not get in it,,and all those who have got through ISB should join ISB if you can afford it..who is confronting that :)

    2. US VISA - I have atleast 27 batchmates from my class itself who have visited US in a period of 10 months since joining..Still you can argue if you want to for sake of one which got rejected..coz neither you nor me know the reasons

    3. Average Salaries...Dude Relax.never was this asked and may be after this suggestion of yours they will come up with a different salary structure this yr...give time to colleges to learn...no one was born perfect including you

    4. Decent for you and others mite be diff...for me any campus which has wifi, gym, library, 1 seminar hall, 3 classrooms and cabins for prof's is decent..and the question is IS Great Lakes hiding it ...no..?? everyone is invited to see the campus...we arent putting a rosy pic..

    5. Permanent Faculty...You didnt answer me...if you can outsource work from US to India and still do it..why cant you you have a model of visiting faculties..And Great Lakes has made it clear it is a model they back and work continue with this model..so wheres the issue.

Stop comparing two colleges coz every college has plus and minus...ISB is a great college and so is IIM A or others but then was IIM born with greatness or was it the quality of students over a period of 25 yrs who created this brand...

Give things time and let them grow...instead of always playing blame game...

I hope you approve this comment (suggestion stop this modertor stuff on your blog for free flow of ideas)

  6. My take on the "insider".
    1. ISB has a world ranking of 20 by FT and IIM A doesn't come in the top 100 . In India IIM A comes in the top followed by a few others followed by ISB according to a few of those Indian ranking systems. Now , whom do you trust? Buddy they are two ranking systems. I can come up with my own ranking system tomorrow which yells tha Lakes is 1 . It's upto you to beleive it .

2.VISA issue is really a non issue . Isn't it?
3.Almost all the top B Schools in India work out a bit on the salary front . Read
4.New Campus is coming up . If there are a set of great students and an awesome faculty; don't you think that's a good enough reason to celebrate the setup . Campus is just an icing on the cake. And it will come soon.
5.ISB has approx 432 students and Great Lakes has 165 . So, in that way student faculty ratio in great lakes ( putting together the international visiting faculties ) , is quite comparable to that of ISB.

I'm not trying to take any sides out here .
